History

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Posse was started in 1946 when the local Sheriff published a document that contained the names of men and women that could be called upon to help with law enforcement and search and rescue needs. Eventually the need grew, and two separate organizations were formed, allowing each group to focus on their primary objectives. Both of these organizations continue to serve the community.

The Sheriff’s Posse has maintained a Mounted Unit for most of our existence. In addition to serving locally, the Mounted Unit has been requested to perform precision drills and Honor Guard details for the Calgary Stampede and the Rose Bowl Parade at one point.

The Sheriff Posse holds status as a 501(c)(3) organization. Even though our nonprofit status has changed forms over the years, it never changed our goal of serving the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff Posse has a long history of members who have gone on to become full time Law Enforcement Officers and holding the office of Sheriff, Undersheriff and other Command Staff in many Law Enforcement agencies around Montana!”
