Reserve Deputy Program

Reserve Deputy Program

This program meets Montana Code Annotated requirements, with Auxiliary Officers training to become sworn Reserve Deputies in Flathead County.

The Flathead County Reserve Deputy force consists of individuals with a willingness to serve in supporting full-time deputies on patrol and possibly interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement themselves.  They receive extended training that allows them to operate in a more independent capacity.  With these increased responsibilities, more training is required including a basic reserve academy followed by supplemental academy and field training hours.  Reserve deputies are required to maintain the same standards as full-time deputies in compliance with MCA 7-32-213.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Flathead Valley Community College to create a reserve officer training course under the leadership of multiple law enforcement agencies, integrating certified instructors from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kalispell Police Department, Two Bear Air, Flathead Search and Rescue, Flathead County Justice System, and Northwest Drug Task Force.  Cadets participate in a semester-long academy and are expected to maintain high academic standards as they enter the law enforcement world where they are required to continually better themselves in consistent training, service, and volunteerism.

Reserve deputies fulfill all the same duties as posse members (e.g. events, natural disasters, detention support, etc.) as well as provide in-field aid to full-time, sworn deputies on patrol, acting as their cover officers.  The reserve force is divided into two tiers, basic and advanced, that contain specific duties and responsibilities based on the level of training the individual possesses. This force is composed of individuals at all stages of life from students to full-time business owners.  If you are interested in becoming a reserve deputy, please reference the joining process graphic, and contact Corporal Charles Pesola at cpesola@flathead.mt.gov
